What is Cryotherapy?

Cryotherapy is a medical procedure that involves using extreme cold to destroy tissue. This process is known as cry-necrosis and is typically carried out using an instrument called a cryopen. At VITALUXE Health and Aesthetics Fareham, we offer cryotherapy as a treatment option for a range of skin imperfections, including skin tags, age spots, warts, actinic keratosis, verruca’s, milia, cherry angiomas, and more.

What is a Cryopen?

The Cryopen treatment involves holding the application as close as possible to the skin imperfection and quickly moving it towards and away from it. Depending on the size and depth of the imperfection, the procedure can last for 1-30 seconds. After the first freeze cycle, the tissue is allowed to thaw for approximately 30 seconds, before starting the second freeze cycle. During the second cycle, the tissue will freeze faster than during the first cycle. This process helps effectively destroy the targeted tissue, making Cryopen treatment a highly effective option for addressing skin imperfections.

Is Cryotherapy for me?

While cryotherapy is generally safe, certain factors need to be considered. Skin type and location are evaluated for freeze times, and people with high levels of cryoglobulins should be treated with caution. Dark-skinned patients may experience lighter skin around the treated area. It's advised to consult with a professional before undergoing cryotherapy or any medical procedure.

Cryotherapy results vary depending on the type of lesion. Most lesions are permanently removed, while some require multiple treatments. The instrument used should adapt to variable dosing power. It's important to strike a balance between achieving desired results and minimizing damage to the surrounding skin. Deep lesions may require several aggressive treatments.

Will there be scarring?

Scarring is rare after Cryopen treatments, but temporary skin pigmentation changes may occur. The number of treatments needed depends on the lesion type and depth. Most common warts require only one treatment. Patients can resume normal activities after treatment but should protect the treated area from damage and abrasion.

Compared to other techniques for removing skin lesions, cryotherapy is generally considered to be more effective, as it requires no anesthesia and causes less scarring. It is also associated with minimal post-treatment care, which can make it a more convenient option for many patients.
